Jewellery Care
Jewellery Care
- Handle your jewellery with care.
- We recommend you remove your jewellery when washing your hands or applying hand sanitiser and lotion, ensuring your skin is dry before handling your piece.
- When storing your jewellery, please use the soft pouch provided, protecting it from other objects that may scratch its surface. We advise keeping pieces separate.
- Please put your jewellery on last, after applying makeup, perfume, hairspray and lotions.
- Whenever necessary, use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean your jewellery pieces. If especially unclean, warm, soapy water will help to remove grease from gold and diamond pieces. For pieces featuring carved stone and special materials (such as tagua seed, mother of pearl, emeralds, etc), please refer to ‘Special Materials Care’.
- We advise removing jewellery before physical activity or tasks, for example yoga or playing tennis, especially rings and bracelets, to prevent undue friction or pressure on the pieces.
- We recommend checking that clasps and fittings continue to be in good working order. If in doubt, please discontinue wearing the piece and contact us for advice.
- When storing and transporting, chains should be fastened and flat.
- We recommend an annual check of your jewellery to inspect settings, fittings and clasps.
- We offer an in-house cleaning and polishing service for of Fernando Jorge jewellery (subject to piece and location). More intensive cleaning and refurbishment can be arranged at our workshop. Please contact us to enquire.
Special Materials Care
- We advise keeping your piece in a cool, dry place and avoiding over exposure to direct sunlight, as it may affect the colour of stones.
- Your piece should not to be immersed in water and should be kept away from corrosive products (chlorine, vinegar, bleach, etc).
- Natural materials such as jade and petrified wood can vary greatly, and we embrace this. Inconsistencies and irregularities are not deemed a defect.
Tagua Seed
Tagua is an Aamazonian seed, also known as vegetable ivory. Due to its natural roughness and texture, it is used in jewellery as a low-impact and sustainable
Since this is a natural material, each tagua piece is unique, and its colour may change slightly over time. To keep your tagua piece looking its best, it will require the following care:
- We recommend that your tagua piece be stored in a pouch, protected from other objects that may scratch its surface.
- Avoid keeping it for prolonged periods in damp conditions or in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time, as excessive humidity or dryness can cause the material to crack.
- Please avoid wearing your tagua piece during exercise and whilst showering. It should also be removed before submerging in water (bathing, swimming pool, ocean, etc). as gradual absorption can occur.
Mother of Pearl
Mother of Pearl, also known as Nacre, is an organic material produced by some molluscs as an inner shell layer. It is strong, resilient and iridescent.
Since this is a natural material, each mother of pearl piece is unique, and its colour may change slightly over time. To keep your mother of pearl piece looking its best, it will require the following care:
- We recommend storing your mother of pearl piece in a pouch, protected from other objects that may scratch its surface.
- Avoid keeping your piece in high temperatures and exposing to direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time. Mother of pearl is best preserved in a humid environment, which helps prevent the shell from drying out.
- Please avoid wearing your mother of pearl piece during exercise and whilst showering. It should also be removed before submerging in water (bathing, swimming pool, ocean, etc) as gradual absorption can occur.
Emerald
Emerald is one of the most precious gemstones from the beryl mineral family. The intense green colour is caused by the presence of chromium and sometimes vanadium in its composition.
Emeralds typically have inclusions, making them susceptible to breakages. The inclusions and fissures within an emerald are described as gardens because of their mossy appearance.
These imperfections are different in each emerald and are used to identify them, giving each stone a unique character. To keep your emerald piece looking its best, it will require the following care:
- We recommend that your emerald piece be stored in a pouch, protecting it from colliding with other objects.
- We recommend you remove your emerald piece when washing your hands or applying hand sanitiser.
- Avoid keeping your piece in high temperatures and exposing to direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time.
- You can apply Vaseline or mineral oil to your emeralds to restore their shine if they have accidentally been exposed to chemicals or sunlight.

Therefore, it is important to:

- Hand sanitisers
- Lotions, creams, and sunscreens
- Cleaning products

Using Creams and Perfumes
When applying creams or perfumes, follow these instructions:
- Remove the wooden piece before applying any cream or perfume.

- Never spray perfume directly onto the piece.

- Annual Check: The piece should be brought to us annually for a review of the wood treatment and an inspection of its condition to ensure it remains in good shape.
Chain Care
Many Fernando Jorge pieces features snake chain in many of his their designs because it is smooth and flexible. These qualities also mean these pieces needs to be handled and stored with care:
- Refrain from bending the chain or applying pressure to it: bends can cause kinks, which are not repairable.
- Be aware that the chain may stretch and ‘relax’ over time.
- Store the piece separately, ensuring it is protected from other objects.
- When not worn, keep the chain flat and straight.
